Acapulco is home to a handful of cultural attractions and museums, which appeal to visitors looking for something a little different than beaches or scuba diving. The Acapulco History Museum is known locally as the Museo Historico de Acapulco and is housed within the San Diego Fort, which is known for it eye-catching pentagon structure.

Nearby, the House of the Masks (Casa de las Mascaras) is another appealing alternative and houses many elaborately decorated Mexican masks, both old and new, traditional and modern. Acapulco's main museums are explained further below.

This popular museum offers a wealth of exhibits about the city and the state of Guerrero as a whole. A series of large and well-lit rooms offer plenty of cultural displays to enjoy, including the city's pre-Hispanic history, together with information about pirates, missionaries and the era of independence. The Acapulco History Museum also boasts impressive collections of colourful silks, antique furnishings and some ancient pottery. Of particular interest, look out for the vibrant outdoor performances, which take place at 20:00 between Thursday and Saturday and are usually in Spanish.

Located close to the fort and off the pedestrianised area of the Morelos, Acapulco's interesting Mask Museum boasts an impressive collection of different Mexican masks, from all around the country. Many of the masks are extremely colourful and have been created by modern artists, while others are much older and beautifully decorated, with great attention to detail and quality.
