Getting Around, Acapulco Travel and Acapulco Transport

Acapulco is a modern Mexican city and as such offers a well-developed transport infrastructure, with many travel options on hand to allow tourists to fully explore the city. Most tourists fly into the neighbouring Acapulco International Airport, where car rental is amongst the most popular ground transport options, while other visitors travel into Acapulco's harbour on enormous cruise liners.
Within the city environs, Acapulco is home to an excellent network of bus transport, which travels daily between 05:00 and 23:00. Taxi transport is always extremely popular in Acapulco and round trips can be surprisingly cheap and competitive.

Acapulco is home to a busy airport and is a popular destination for numerous international flights, which often connect through Mexico City and also Guadalajara, arriving from the US and Canada. The airport also goes by the name of General Juan N. Álvarez International Airport and is the biggest transport hub of its kind within the whole of Mexico's southerly Pacific area. Acapulco Airport is around 23 km / 14 miles to the south-east of the city's centrally located Zócalo and regularly receives flights from Cancun, Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta and other domestic Mexico cities. Shuttle bus transport can be reserved in advance if required, although taxi travel is always available.

With bus transport and taxis being so readily available in Acapulco, many visitors find it quite unnecessary to hire a car. Traffic conditions can also be extremely heavy at times, parking spaces hard to come by, and the street layouts confusing. However, if you plan to travel outside of Acapulco and explore surrounding parts of Guerrero, then rental cars and jeeps are the perfect mode of transport and available at the nearby airport and around the city itself, particularly throughout La Costera.

Acapulco Travel and Transport: Travel by Bus and Coach - Acapulco, Mexico, MX
Each of the buses in Acapulco are privately owned and travel around a number of set routes, starting from La Costera, just two blocks to the east of the Zócalo and opposite the Sanborns department store. Bus transport in Acapulco can be quite an experience, with many bus drivers choosing to play loud music along the way. In general, buses with air conditioning tend to be slightly more expensive, with the main bus routes as follows:
- Base-Caleta travels between the Zócalo and the Playa Caleta
- Base-Cine Rio-Caleta - travels along La Costera, heading westwards to the Playa Caleta
- Puerto Marqués-Centro - travels between La Costera and the Puerto Marqués
- Zócalo-Playa Pie de Cuesta - travels to the Pie de la Cuesta beach road from La Costera

Large cruise ships and ferries regularly travel into the port of Acapulco and many tourists reach the city using this mode of transport. The city's cruise ship terminal can be found close to Fort San Diego and is within easy reach of the Zócalo.

Rail transport is not available in Acapulco, although an electric passenger train network is planned for the very distant future.

Taxis are plentiful in Acapulco and the numerous blue and white VW taxis are especially popular, together with traditional yellow taxi cabs. In fact, there is so much taxi transport available around Acapulco that many will provide inexpensive round trips and wait for you whilst you visit attractions, shop or eat out at restaurants. It is often a good idea to check the going rate for journeys with locals before you climb into the taxi and begin to travel, should you feel that it is a little expensive.
